Are you the type of person who likes to set a couple of New Year Resolutions and then by Feb you have screwed them all up and thrown them into the too hard basket. I know what that feels like. Too often we set ourselves lofty goals that are good in theory but without the know how fail in the first month. These 6 great tips that will see you smash your goals in 2023.
Rather then trying to smash all of your goals in the first quarter. Consider prioritising them and only tackling one at a time. That way you can focus all of your energy on one goal. Once it becomes habit you can move onto the next goal you would like to achieve.
Now that you have chosen one goal to work on. Dive a bit deeper and ask yourself why is this goal so important to you and how will it add value to your life. Jot down any reasons that resonate and make sure you read them every day. This will help motivate you to stay on track and remind you why you chose to work on this goal in the first place.
In my experience one of the main reasons goals fail is that we forget to share them with our support crew. This might be your husband or best friend or it might be a professional like me. We all know that when we have kids it takes a village. Well when we want to make real change we need a village again.
Think about the idea of losing weight. The people we live with play a really important role in this. They can support you by not bringing junk food home, making good food choices alongside you and helping you say no when your motivation is lacking.
You might also need the support of a professional who has better nutritional knowledge and can help you gather the info you need to make the right choices. Lastly you might need the support of a life coach. Who can help you understand why you have made poor food choices before. What blocks are coming up for you and help you set realistic time sensitive goals. Getting this step right will really help you smash your goals in 2023.
Life goals take work and time. Nobody got to where they are today by setting a goal, going to sleep and waking up with the goal achieved. When you are about to start working on your goal it’s important you are in a position to give it 100%. Have you sourced all of the resources that will set you up for success and minimised all of the distractions.
Goals that are time-specific have a much greater chance of being achieved. Because our brains work best when we know how long we are going to work on something for. A series of micro goals is also more beneficial then one big goal because our brain can’t tell the difference between a big or a little goal. It simply acknowledges that we have achieved something.
So if your goal is to loose weight. Rather than saying I want to loose 20kg’s. You might have a series of micro goals that include things like. Not buying chocolate in the weekly shop, limiting takeaway to once a week, not eating after 8PM. Then each time you do one of the following you are making a really positive step towards your ultimate goal. You also get to pat yourself on the back many times between now and that ultimate goal of losing 20kgs, instead of just once. The other reason to set a date is that you can measure your success or lack their of so far.
Change is never smooth sailing and accepting that is important. Each time you fail, take the time to reflect and jot down what worked and what didn’t. Using my weight loss example before you might have been really good at not adding chocolate to your weekly shop but terrible at not snacking after 8. The beauty of this is that next time you tackle this goal you will be able to look back and know where you need the extra support to help move you closer to success next time.
So regardless of when you stumbled across this article. Today is a good a day to start working towards how you are going to smash your goals in 2023. It’s time to start visualising your goals and setting out aims for where you want your career and life to go. Use the tips above to help guide you and enjoy the fact that people who set goals are 10 times more likely to change their lives for the better after 6 months than people who don’t set goals.
Good luck and don’t forget to reach out if you have identified that you need a life coach in your corner to help you achieve the changes you are after.
